Implementing The Genetics/Family Tree Unit: Book Work

Book Work
Students read a few chapters in a life science text book about genetics and Mendel's Principles of Heredity with the SQ3R method (Skim, Question, Read, Recite, and Review). They then answer questions and review vocabulary words. Work is evaluated via peer and self assessment methods.

Why is it important to read about genetics? Students are able to ease into the material and get a good overview of genetics with the reading assignments. Further, this gives Mr. McWeeny a chance to help students develop their readings skills in science class.

Materials & Resources Implementation General Tips/
Obstacles to Expect
  1. Life Science Text Book
  2. Student Notebooks

Students read about genetics and are asked specific questions to focus their readings.

See the story of how Mr. McWeeny implements this unit. The assignments, student work, reactions and assessment are displayed.

Students may have trouble focusing on their readings. Challenge them to focus for specific periods of time and reward them with extra credit points. For example, Mr. McWeeny asks students to sit for 20 minutes in a room during class to do their reading and if they do this they can get a higher score.

Useful Assessments:

  • Self Assessment
  • Peer Assessment
  • Teacher Assessment
