The Think Tank: A Discovery Room for Young Learners

Central Ideas

The central teaching tool is to follow up on a student's chosen lab involvement or project by posing questions and identifying potential challenges. We've found that kind of strategically positioned dialog heightens the general level of thinking taking place in the lab, and reinforces connections to grade-level learning.

The Think Tank has become a unique and open format to establish transfer of learning . As teachers attend the lab with their students, many comment that the experience is like taking a field trip. Teachers use the Think Tank as a place where they can identify and cultivate new connections to grade-level content and also share time with their students in a space other than the classroom. "Time in the lab has a positive effect on my students that lasts for days. It seems to create a new base for our work together."
