Field Trip Preparation Checklist

  • Check your schedules and arrange for students to be released
  • Student permission slips
  • Arrange for transport
  • Arrange lunches
  • Choose and examine your site:
    • Accessibility / permits
    • Parking
    • Safe working area / roads / construction
    • Good approaches and ample space
    • Place to leave equipment and have a large group discussion
    • Bathrooms
    • Walking distances
    • Student visibility for chaperones
  • Equipment:
    • Think about what you will need and how much
    • Consider organizing equipment into boxes by class or even small packets by group. The less rearranging you need to do on site, the better.
    • Sample storage and transport back to the labs
    • Waste disposal
    • Rain gear
    • If you will have equipment that rotates between the groups, think this through
    • Crates for standing in the water
