David Eddy Spicer
Research Director

David Eddy Spicer, Research Director, oversees all research and evaluation activities undertaken by WIDE World. These include formative evaluations of WIDE World offerings, as well as impact studies to gauge the effect of professional development on shifts in teaching practice and student learning.

David's research specialties include program evaluation, qualitative research, and multimodal analysis of interaction. He is particularly interested in job-embedded and technology-enabled collaborative learning for educators at all levels. Prior to his work with WIDE World, David directed new media research and development in the Case Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he designed and developed new forms of web-based, video, and multimedia curricula. He is the author of over 40 text and multimedia case studies on education, health, and public administration and policy. He has researched and written about a range of issues related to technology in professional development.

David holds a Master's in International Education from Boston University and a doctorate in Learning and Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His doctoral thesis is an in-depth study of the collaborative work of science teachers and teacher-leaders online and on-site to support improved practices and their own professional learning and growth. David's work is inspired by the idea that creative and intelligent use of technology can help transform public education when coupled with close attention to social and cultural contexts.
