Overarching Course Goals / Throughlines
The core questions we will investigate during this course are: - How can we design curriculum that develops student understanding of key curriculum standards?
- How can we integrate new technologies to enhance teaching and learning for understanding?
- How can we actively learn in an online professional community?
Course Sessions
SESSION 0: ORIENTATION
We like to open the doors to our "virtual classroom" a few days early so that you have some time to explore the online environment and read a little about your new online colleagues before the course officially begins.
Goals -- Understand what roles your instructors and coaches will play to support you in this endeavor.
- Begin to develop a relationship with your coach and fellow learners.
- Understand how the course sessions will be structured and how to anticipate your weekly responsibilities.
- Understand how this "virtual classroom" (WIDE course environment) can support your learning.
- Begin to understand the overarching course goals.
- Relate the course content to your own goals.
SESSION 1: INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING TO STANDARDS WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Goals -- Begin to understand how the Teaching for Understanding Framework can help clarify and focus existing practice.
- Begin to understand how new technologies and TfU can support one another.
- Begin to understand how to identify relevant new technologies to "leverage" complex parts of curriculum.
- Begin to appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
SESSION 2: CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS AND UNDERSTANDING GOALS
Goals -- Understand how Understanding Goals are different from other learning goals.
- Understand how to formulate curriculum standards as Understanding Goals.
- Begin to understand how the Collaborative Curriculum Design Tool can support your curriculum development.
- Understand how to use criteria to reflect on your work and the work of your colleagues.
- Understand how to use technologies to enhance one or more of the elements of TfU framework.
- Appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
SESSION 3: STUDENT PRODUCTS AND PERFORMANCES
Goals -- Understand the criteria for Performances of Understanding in the TfU framework.
- Understand how to design a sequence of UPs that will develop and demonstrate your students' understanding of key goals, building from where students begin to a culminating performance.
- Understand how to use criteria to reflect on your work and the work of your colleagues.
- Understand how to use technologies to enhance one or more of the elements of TfU framework.
- Appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
SESSION 4: INTEGRATING ONGOING ASSESSMENT
Goals -- Understand the criteria for Ongoing Assessment in the TfU framework.
- Understand how to incorporate a process of ongoing assessment into your curriculum plan.
- Understand how to use criteria to reflect on your work and the work of your colleagues.
- Begin to understand how to align your goals, performances, and assessments to support students' understanding.
- Understand how to use technologies to enhance one or more of the elements of TfU framework.
- Appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
SESSION 5: NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND ALIGNMENT
Goals - - Understand how to use the elements of the TfU framework together as a basis for designing and analyzing coherent curriculum and educational applications of new technologies.
- Understand how to use criteria to reflect on your work and the work of your colleagues.
- Understand how to align your goals, performances, and assessments to support students' understanding.
- Understand how to provide constructive, supportive feedback to colleagues.
- Appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
SESSION 6: SYNTHESIS, REVISION, REFLECTION & NEXT STEPS
Goals -- Understand how to use the elements of the TfU framework together as a basis for designing and analyzing coherent curriculum and educational applications of new technologies.
- Understand how to use criteria and feedback to reflect on your work.
- Appreciate how to build an online learning community with other professionals.
- Understand how to connect the work of this course to your own work.
- Understand some of the challenges associated with teaching for understanding and how to support your own continuing learning about the content of this module
- Understand ways to continue working with the ideas and colleagues of this course after the term has ended.
Professional Development Credit
For those interested in earning professional development points/units/credits, a certificate for up to 42 hours will be issued upon completion of the course, if all the assignments have been completed -- approximately 7 hours per session.
Three additional hours may be earned by completing one or more of the following assessments, for a total of 45 participation hours: - midterm course evaluation (1 hour)
- final course evaluation (2 hours)
